Hamish Rickerby

I used to be involved with the Christchurch BBS scene back in the mid 90s, and Nate Cull wrote one of the most memorable short stories that I have ever read – I think I may have read it on fidonet, but my memory escapes me now. I don’t remember the title, but the story was just a conversation of theirs. I’ll have to see if I still have it. I think I do – it was important enough back then for me to print out, and file.

I always thought it would make a fantastic short film as well.

Anyway, I want to meet Nate Cull because that story he wrote sparked a bit of creativity in me.

because he has a sexy name and because he is a man who has sung karaoke

amc had a really sore hand last weekend (27th May). She had hurt it the night before. The palm, just below the little finger on her left hand (I think) was all swollen, and a little purple from bruising.

We had been at Karaoke and she was into the accompaniment side of the K-Box experience a little too much, and bashed her hand too hard with a tambourine.

hehehe. Apparently AMC shouldn’t mix alcohol, karaoke and tambourines.

She is the smartest person I know. And I think I know quite a few clever people.

She constantly impresses me.

Before I met Hamish I would never have even considered posting a story like this on the internet! But since he is the only reason I am on this site right now – and because he wrote a story about me  – I guess I’m obliged to write something.
Hamish has already described how I met him. He says he was fairly drunk at the time. Because I was apparently much more drunk than he was at the time, I probably can’t contribute much more to that story…but I can talk about who introduced me to him – ME! :-)
In an out-of-character action on the advice on my workmate, I just went up and started talking to him. I really am quite embarrassed that I did that actually…but it was completely worth it and I’ve had so much fun and such a great time getting to know Hamish since then.

I met AMC at Rakinos one evening. I was fairly drunk. Apparently she was too. She just came over to me and started talking. I thought she knew the guy I was standing with talking to, but then he left and it was just me and her.

I thought we got on really well. I found out that evening that she’s from the same city as me, and that her parents old house was over the fence from my high school. And that she went to the same high school as my cousins.

Eventually she said that she should go because she was out with some workmates, but asked if I wanted her number. I said “OK”.

I have lots of good memories of Hamish. When we would collaborate on elaborate projects to make stuff, or our movies we made, hehe, or design a perpetual motion machine or some other crazy device.
He is one of those friends who is always reliable and you know would never stab you in the back. Out of all the people I know, Hamish is someone who I give maximum respect.
I miss hanging with him and talking about our next crazy project, or asking him about computer stuff that I don’t know.
We had fun building a jump in his paddock when it snowed and videoing ourselves on snowboards.
We went on some great road trips.
I had more fun when Hamish was around.
The other great thing about hamish was that he would never judge you for what you did. I did some pretty bad stuff when I was a teenager, but Hamish never made me feel crap about it, whether he agreed or not.

My favorite memory of Johann was when he was living out near my parents place in West Melton. We would ride his motorbike around his farm, and take his old Morris Marina rally driving. And when we were driving down Riccarton Road and he would drive in puddles and splash people. We were mean kids. But it was funny.

Actually, there are lots of favorite memories of Johann. Most of the rest are from when he was flatting in the city, and we (and lots of other friends) has crazy drunken evenings, and would hit dance parties etc…

Then there was NYE2000. That wasn’t perhaps a favorite (of mine), but memorable…

I have been friends with Hamish for ages. He is a top bloke. A little nerdy, but aren’t we all? He has good taste in music.
